Our team
The core of GPF
Global Public Forum was founded in 2022 by Zhouai Joann Yu and Hanzhang Swen. Currently seniors at the Horace Mann School (class of 2024), they lead GPF and develop its curriculum along with the help of other members of Horace Mann Debate.

Zhouai Joann Yu
Joann joined Horace Mann’s Public Forum Debate Team in 8th grade. Currently a senior, she is currently president of the team. In her sophomore and junior years, she qualified to States, Nationals and TOC. She was 8th speaker at TOC, reached deep elimination rounds at the prestigious tournaments of Blue Key, Princeton, Harvard, and Ridge, placing 4th at the New York Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament.

Hanzhang Swen
Hanzhang began debating in public forum in her freshman year of high school. In her sophomore year, she qualified and won the 6th speaker award for the Silver TOC tournament, won numerous top 15 speaker awards at national tournaments, and reached deep elimination rounds at tournaments like Blue Key, Bronx Sci, and Ridge. In her junior year, Hanzhang qualified for Gold TOC and placed 4th at the New York Invitational.

Maeve Goldman
Maeve began debating in 6th grade; now as a senior, she is President of the Horace Mann Debate Team. She championed the Stanford Junior Varsity Invitational her freshman year and reached Semifinals at the Columbia Speech and Debate Tournament as a sophomore. In her free time, she likes to watch cat videos and play with her 14-year-old dog, Harry.

Head of Outreach and Recruitement; China
Christina Wang
Christina is currently a senior at the Li De School in Beijing, China. She joined the GPF team upon its founding and has headed the expansion of 4 GPC chapters across the metropolitan Beijing area. In 2022, she received the highest marks in China for Drama and Public Speaking. In her free time, Christina enjoys listening to classical music and watching K-dramas.

Emma Chang
Emma is currently a junior at the Horace Mann School. She has qualified for states, NSDA Nationals, and TOC, breaking to elimination rounds at NSDA Nationals. She has won top 3rd speaker at Harvard and has earned TOC bids at Scarsdale and Glenbrooks. In her free time, she likes to review trends on twitter and frequent as many boba shops as possible.

James Kapadia
James is currently a junior at the Horace Mann School. He has competed at over 10 varsity-level public forum tournaments at the varsity level. In his sophomore year, he secured a spot at both the Tournament of Champions and the NSDA Nationals Tournament. At NSDA nationals, he placed top 48 in the nation. In his free time, James likes to wrestle (semi)competitively and drink hot oolong tea.

Emily Park
Emily is a current sophomore at Horace Mann in New York City. She has started debating since 7th grade. In her freshman year, she championed the Lexington Winter Invitational, top-seeded in the Harvard Annual Forensics Tournament, and placed top 4 in the state. In her free time, Emily enjoys playing the violin and listening to K-pop.

Sarina Shah
Sarina is currently a freshman at the Horace Mann School in New York. Sarina has done debate for 2 years and has participated in various circuit tournaments, reaching elimination rounds at the Georgetown Fall Tournament (octas) and TOC Digital (octas). Sarina also championed the Lexington Winter Invitational in the novice division and was top-seeded at the Harvard Forensics tournament, reaching octas in the JV division.

Kevin Cheng
Kevin is a sophomore currently at Horace Mann School in New York. He earned 2nd in Speaker Awards at the 2022 Lakeland Westchester Classic and was the Octofinalist at the prestigious Middle School Tournament of Champions. He was also the triple-octofinalist at the 2023 Harvard National Forensics Tournament and the double-octofinalist at the 2023 NYSFL State Championships.

Claire Tsai
Claire started Public Forum Debate in 7 grade. She is currently a sophomore on the Horace Mann Debate team. She competed on both local and national circuits, reaching elimination rounds at prestigious tournaments including the Annual Harvard Forensics Tournament and the New York State State Championships. In her free time, Claire likes to café hop across Manhattan and play with her Siamese cat, Lucky.

Michael Ji
Michael Ji started Public Forum Debate in middle school and is currently a sophomore on the Horace Mann Debate Team. In his freshman year, was awarded 5th speaker at the Lexington Winter Invitational. He has reached elimination rounds in tournaments like the Harvard National Forensics Tournament and reached the quarterfinals at the prestigious NYSFL State Championships.

Anusha Kumar
Anusha is currently a sophomore at Horace Mann School and has been a member of Public Forum Debate since 6th grade. She was first speaker at the 2022 Spring Potomac Intramural, a triple-octafinalist at the 49th Harvard National Forensics Tournament, and qualified for New York State Championships, advancing to Quarterfinals. In her free time, Anusha likes to shop, read, and go out with her friends.
